RICHMOND, Va. -- With officials wary of having large crowds at commemorations because of the coronavirus, many Memorial Day events are going virtual this year.
In fact, Monday's ceremony at the Virginia War Memorial to commemorate Memorial Day will be broadcast on WTVR CBS 6, WTVR.com/LIVE2and the WTVR CBS 6 Facebook page starting at 10 a.m.
The National Park Service will also broadcast their events online and the National Memorial Day Concert will have only a virtual audience this year.
Additionally, the annual observance at the Arlington National Cemetery will be closed to the public, but streamed online.
About 1,000 of the Army's Old Guard soldiers were allowed to continue the tradition of placing small American flags near each of the more than 240,000 headstones.
The cemetery is only allowing in family members visiting their loved ones' grave sites over the weekend and everyone was required to wear a face covering or mask.
