RICHMOND, Va. -- As hurricanes Laura and Marco approach the Gulf Coast, Virginia’s Red Cross will be among those ready to respond.

According to the organization, four local American Red Cross disaster responders flew out Sunday morning from Richmond International Airport. They will assist in pre-landfall operations in Louisiana and Texas.

Among the volunteer group is Susie Clark, one some would consider a volunteer veteran. Clark is in her seventies and has volunteered for more than 50 natural disasters during her time with Red Cross.

“I think it’s the most greatest thing I could do to volunteer for the American Red Cross,” Clark said. “And I just love going out and helping people... My bottom line goal is I want to help somebody, make their day better."

Experts are telling people living along the gulf to expect heavy rain, flash flooding and powerful winds that could cause power outages.
