HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- One of Johann Odom's former students organized a tribute to honor the beloved Henrico High School teacher and coach Saturday.

The high school's principal notified teachers and students earlier this week that Odom had passed away unexpectedly Wednesday.

“I am grateful and happy that he has gone to glory, and he will always just be remembered," the organizer said. "I'm at a loss of words, but it does mean a lot to be able to see the support.”

Family, friends and students joined the ceremony, which featured a balloon release, despite the rainy weather.

Odom was a Career and Technical Education teacher and Cross Country and Track and Field coach at the high school. The Navy veteran also previously taught at Elko Middle School and Varina High School.

Odom was remembered as "a great soul, a talker, and someone who could have taught a master class on kindness."
