Over 600 same-day registrations at VCU on Election Day, precinct captain says

RICHMOND, Va. — Over 600 same-day registrations took place at a precinct on VCU's campus, and roughly 500 provisional ballots were cast, according to the precinct captain.

The captain of the precinct at VCU's Student Commons said she and her team of three were very overwhelmed by the influx of same-day registrations, and that this number is far higher than normal.

Indira O'Neil is a freshman at VCU. She just turned 18 in October. She had planned to cast her ballot in her hometown of Ashburn, but could not make it home in time to vote. Without an updated Richmond address, O'Neil cast a provisional ballot in Richmond on Election Day.

O'Neil said young people need more information about how to vote, including how to update their address for their voter registration.

"I think if we knew more about how to vote and what we needed to do in advance, we'd be more prepared," O'Neil said.

Even so, O'Neil believes young people do care about the future of the country.

"Even though we're so young, we care about the future of our country," she said. "And this is a big election, so I think it's important for everybody to vote."
