CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- The Cosby High School baseball team is mourning the loss of player Steele Kirwan, who passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer.
The Cosby senior's jersey was placed on the baseball field in his honor Saturday afternoon.
The baseball team remembered the teen as a "great teammate, kid, young man and friend."
The team said Kirwan was "a fighter like no other" who made them stronger and taught them to never take anything for granted.
Today we lost one of the toughest kids I have ever had the pleasure to meet. He was a fighter like no other who has made us all stronger and taught us to never take anything for granted. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family. Cosby baseball will be forever Steele Strong! pic.twitter.com/XNxClqwH7k

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family," the team's coach wrote. "Cosby baseball will be forever Steele Strong!"
Kirwan's father said his son was his hero and his best friend.
The family is asking that you keep them in your prayers. However, they requested that no one gather at the high school as a precaution because of the pandemic.
