HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- A man was injured after a fight led to a shooting during an event at the Eastern Henrico Recreation Center Saturday afternoon.
Police were called to the 1400 block of N. Laburnum Avenue for a fight just after 3:20 p.m.
"At some point that call for a fight escalated to a person shot," WTVR CBS 6 Assignment Manager Robert Hughes said.
More 911 calls revealed that there was a large crowd on the scene and another 911 call indicated that shots had been fired.
"The scene was very chaotic," Lt. J. R. Howard said. "There was a lot of individuals trying to exit the community center. Some in cars, some on foot. Some were juveniles, some were adults."
Police said a man was taken to an area hospital, but officials did not elaborate on the extent of his injuries.
Another man was detained at the scene.
Police have not said what led up to the shots fired.
"We do not know whether this was a private event -- or if everybody was just out and about," Hughes said. "Because Henrico, of course, is in Phase Two of the coronavirus outbreak. So people are able to come out and recreation centers are now open."
Officials said the rec center will be closed Sunday. As a result, a march that was slated to begin outside the center will instead start across the street at the Fairfield Library.
