PETERSBURG, Va. -- Petersburg Schools hosted a back-to-school kick off event Saturday at the city’s sports complex.
Families got the chance to meet their school's principal as well as receive any necessary vaccinations, including the COVID vaccine, if they were eligible.
"It's one to make sure the kids are ready for back to school," St. Paul's Baptist Church Outbreak Coordinator Gretta Randolph said. "This year Petersburg City Schools only have in-person classes. So where parents might think, 'Oh, I'm going to change my kid to virtual.' They can't do that now. They passed that deadline, So it's just to make sure the kids are prepared."
Kids also got to pick up free school supplies, including backpacks.
