PETERSBURG, Va. -- High school students who take part in five different winter sports in Petersburg began holiday break believing their season was canceled, but that decision could be reversed during a special school board meeting Wednesday.
The seven board members will discuss the winter sports programs, boys and girls basketball, wrestling, cheerleading and indoor track, at Petersburg High School during a virtual meeting at 6 p.m.
The board previously voted unanimously on Dec. 19 not to hold a winter sports season due to logistical and safety issues after hearing from the school’s athletic director as well as an epidemiologist from Crater Health district, who presented COVID-19 data.
However, the board is set to discuss the topic again during a special meeting.
Athletic Director William Lawson III said he believes the winter sports being played because he said the kids need the opportunity.
However, Lawson said that he will support whatever decision the board decides.
