RICHMOND, Va. -- When Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney announced the resignation of Richmond Police Chief William Smithon Tuesday, he also announced Major William Jody Blackwell would serve as Interim Chief of the Richmond Police Department.
"Interim Chief Blackwell is willing and able to focus on necessary public safety reform, healing, and trust building within the community," Mayor Stoney said of Blackwell.
Blackwell is a 23-year veteran of the Richmond Police Department.
In addition to being a sector Lieutenant, he also previously commanded the city’s Fourth Precinct which includes downtown Richmond and neighborhoods like Jackson Ward, Oregon Hill, Gilpin, and Scott's Addition.
This is a developing story.
