RICHMOND, Va. -- A homicide investigation is now underway after a shooting left one person dead near Byrd Park in Richmond, Crime Insider sources tell CBS 6 Jon Burkett.

Police arrived at the 1300 block of Hampton Street just before 6:30 Wednesday evening, where they found a man with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Caleb Paynter, who frequents Byrd Park says he is upset by the recent gun violence, especially in Byrd Park, where murders are rare.

"People are pretty fed up," Paynter said. "I've lived all around this park, I've never seen it (shootings). Maybe in the 80s on the other side of the park? But never right here."

An SUV left stranded at the crime scene is believed to have been driven by the gunman, sources say. Detectives believe the car may have had a mechanical failure. RPD has confirmed that they are looking into this scenario.

"People bring their kids here every weekend. It's kids, families, everyone's fishing, hanging out," Paynter said. "This is not what you would typically see."
