Police arrived to find Michael Wilson, 43, suffering from a gunshot wound.

He died at the hospital.

Police said they believed the shooting happened at a "social gathering" at a nearby home.

"It's ridiculous because, small town, I think sometimes we're growing but we seem to be stepping backwards," neighbor Terry Hill said. "People's patience is getting real short and I'm not gonna blame it on the young people, I'm gonna say it's just people in general."

Police did not release additional details about the gathering, nor a suspect in the shooting.

Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to call Petersburg/Dinwiddie Crime Solvers at 804-861-1212.
