CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- Authorities have released the name of the inmate who died at the Chesterfield County Jail early Sunday morning.

Officials were alerted just after 5:20 a.m. after the man's cellmate reported he was in "medical distress," according to Capt. Donald W. Huff with the Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office.

"Deputies and medical staff immediately began emergency medical procedures for the 46-year-old male to include CPR and use of an AED until Chesterfield Fire and EMS personnel arrived on scene and assumed lifesaving efforts," Huff said.

The inmate, who was identified as George Adams III of the 7600 block of Edgewood Avenue in Richmond, was later pronounced deceased by EMS crews.

Adams was serving a combined 26-month sentence for three probation violations, Huff said. He was jailed on Feb. 10, 2020.

Adams' body was transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office to determine cause of death.

"A joint investigation, as is standard protocol, is being conducted with Chesterfield Police Department and Chesterfield Sheriff’s Office detectives," Huff said.
