PETERSBURG, Va. -- Police are investigating a hit and run crash that toppled the “Doughboy” soldier statue in Petersburg Thursday morning.

Officers responded to the intersection of S. Sycamore Street and North Boulevard for a vehicle crash at approximately 10:35 a.m.

Upon arrival, officers found an SUV unoccupied that had struck and toppled the Dough Boy World War I monument. That statue was dedicated in 1928 in honor of the local soldiers who died in World War I.

After assessing the damage, city crews are arranging for a crane to come in to upright the monument.

City officials say the roadway near the statue will be closed for the next few hours.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact Petersburg Police at (804)732-4222 or the Petersburg/Dinwiddie Crime Solvers by downloading the P3tips app or by going to P3tips.com.
