RICHMOND, Va. -- One person is dead and one person is critically injured after a shooting at the Belt Atlantic Apartment Complex on Thursday night.

Richmond Police said that Thursday night's shooting marked Richmond's first homicide of the new year.

Police responded to the call around 7 p.m. on Thursday night and were told that a man was not only shot outside but there may also be another victim in an apartment.

"While on scene, we learned more information that a person was possibly down inside one of the apartments. We made entry and found an adult male with at least one gunshot wound and he was pronounced on the scene. We walked through the community, no one else was shot, but obviously, someone was shooting in the vicinity because we heard those shots," Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards said.

Police said an argument is what triggered Thursday night's violence and they are asking the public to come forward with information.

Edwards reassured family members of the victim and residents that there will be an increased police presence in the Belt Atlantic community for the next 48 hours.
