RICHMOND, Va. – More than 20,000 runners and walkers took part in the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k in Richmond.
While thousands found their stride and ran for a reason, the the race was about pushing what is possible for David Richardson.
"To challenge yourself to be better and to improve," Richardson explained. "Trying to keep up with some of the faster friends in the area, it’s always been fun."
Richardson, who is part of the Sportable’sadaptive team, spends his time coaching when he is not competing.
"I'm just trying to teach others if needed," he said. “It feels good to get outside and keep active."
Crystal Jordan is also part of the Sportable team.
Her smile radiated as she crossed the finish line and realized what she had conquered.
Races are much more than just a good time for her, but also a moment to reset.
"Sometimes I actually forget I'm in a wheelchair when I'm in the race,” Jordan said. “You just feel like you are one of the other runners."
But Jordan said the Monument Avenue 10k is special.
"I like the atmosphere with all the curb parties and spectators, it's so loud and energetic and pushes you on," she said.
Jordan hopes others feel inspired by the 10k’s energy and are encouraged to try for themselves.
“It’s the first step. You don't have to go fast, you go at your own pace. Just take your steps," she urged.
