GLOUCESTER, Va. -- Deputies in Virginia say a man was taken into custody a day after his wife was found critically injured and her infant child dead.

The Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release 60-year-old Dennis Chambers was discovered in New Kent County on Wednesday.

Investigators say they were notified by the New Kent County Sheriff’s Office that a citizen saw a 2010 Volkswagen Beetle owned by Chambers at the Wahrani Nature Trail located on Eltham Road.

"Upon extensive search of the area with the assistance of both GCSO and NKCSO, Mr. Chambers was taken into custody on a warrant for Malicious Wounding of his wife," said a Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson. "Upon further investigation a warrant was also obtained against Mr. Chambers for the death of Mrs. Chambers’ 5-month-old female infant."

Chambers has been charged with second degree murder and malicious wounding. He is being held at the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office without bond.

The sheriff’s office says the cause of the girl’s death and the woman’s injuries are still under investigation.

It was not immediately clear if Chambers had a lawyer who could comment on his behalf.
