NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. -- VCU Health's new Emergency Center in New Kent County will open June 1, officials said Friday.

The ER was originally set to open in the spring, but the coronavirus pandemic forced the opening date to be pushed back.

The 17,000-square-foot center will offer around-the-clock emergency medicine physicians, nurses and lab services.

VCU officials said the facility will also reduce travel times for emergency services for people who live in and near New Kent.

Officials said additional safety measures will be in place when the center opens to protect patients from COVID-19 exposure.
