DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va. -- A Dinwiddie County mom and her boyfriend are facing child abuse and neglect charges in the death of an infant.

On September 19, an unresponsive 8-month-old girl was transported from a home in the 7900 block of Boydton Plank Road to Southside Regional Medical Center, according to investigators.

The infant later died at the hospital.

The sheriff's office said foul play was suspected in the death.

The next day, 22-year-old Aurelia Keani Jorge and 20-year-old Tyrese J. Mayo were arrested.

Both have been charged with two counts of child abuse and neglect and two counts of cruelty and injury to a child. Additional charges are pending further investigation.

Court documents obtained by CBS 6 shows that the alleged abuse panned three months, from June to September 2020.

Dinwiddie County Sheriff’s Office investigators are working with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the infant's cause of death.

Officials say Dinwiddie County Social Services has removed a second child from the same residence.

Jorge and Mayo are being held at Meherrin River Regional Jail pending an appearance in Dinwiddie Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.
