RICHMOND, Va. -- Richmond City Council voted Monday to rename a portion of Jefferson Davis Highway.
The stretch of Route 1 from Hull Street to Walmsley Boulevard within city limits will now be called Richmond Highway.
Over the summer, the Richmond branch of the NAACP called for a name change to the highway that honors Confederate President Jefferson Davis.
Other localities in Northern Virginia have already changed the name: The road is called Richmond Highway in Fairfax and Arlington counties and in the city of Alexandria.
