PETERSBURG, Va. -- A five-year-old girl and a six-year-old boy continue to recover Monday after both were shot Saturday night in Petersburg.
“[There's] like a hole in his bladder, so they may have to stitch it up," Varkeya Fields said about another surgery her six-year-old son Ja’den Briggs may have to endure. "They’re trying to let it heal on its own.”
Briggs has undergone two surgeries since being rush to the hospital.
"He's a pretty tough kid," Fields said.
The children were among a dozen or so people outside in the Pecan Acres Estates when someone drove by and opened fire into the crowd.
Petersburg Police are investigating the shooting and said they believed the gunshots came from a Honda or Toyota.
Both children are expected to recover from their gunshot wounds.
"Those were babies. They didn't deserve that," Fields said before delivering a simple message to the shooter. "How would y'all feel if it was your family?"
