HAMPTON, Va. -- A Chesterfield woman was killed in crash near the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel (HRBT).
Yashiema Yvette Lemon, 35, of South Chesterfield, died at the scene of the crash reported early Sunday morning.
She was the passenger in a car involved in a hit-and-run, according to Virginia State Police. The driver of the Ford Fusion in which she was riding remains on the run.
Police were initially alerted to the situation at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday, June 7, when a driver called to report his vehicle had been struck by a silver Ford Fusion on Interstate 64 in Norfolk.
“The driver of the Ford Fusion was traveling at a high rate of speed, lost control of the vehicle, and overturned at the entrance of the tunnel of the westbound lanes,” a Virginia State Police spokesperson said. “ As a result of the crash, [Ms. Lemon] was ejected from the vehicle and died upon impact. The male driver was able to escape from the vehicle after the accident.”
When a witness stopped to help the man after the crash, the man stole the witness’s 2018 Chevrolet Equinox and drove off, police said.
The Chevrolet Equinox was later found “wrecked and abandoned” on Pelican Shores Drive in Hampton, according to police.
State Police have asked for additional witnesses to come forward. Anyone with information was asked to call Virginia State Police at (757) 424-6800.
