PETERSBURG, Va -- Police are investigating after a body was found inside a burning home.

Petersburg Fire Interim Battalion Chief Danny Parton says firefighters were called to a home on South Whitehill Drive at 3:14 a.m.

After working 30 minutes to put out the fire at the single story home, investigators found the body.

Neighbors tell CBS 6 that no one lived inside the home for several months so they were shocked to hear that a body was found.

"I'm devastated for whoever it could have been," said one neighbor. "It's heartwrenching. Just to know that someone is deceased and we don't know or their family members and friends don't know where that people could be."

The body has been sent to the Medical Examiner's Office for identification and cause of death.

Investigators are still determining the case of the fire. Stay with CBS 6 for more updates.
