HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- Police say that Richmond and Henrico detectives are working together to investigate a body found in a cornfield on New Market Road in eastern Henrico.

Crime Insider sources say the body of a person reported missing from Richmond over the weekend was found on Tuesday.

An aerial view shows a car in a cornfield, more than 100 yards in.

Henrico Police were alerted to the area around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon for a suspicious situation.

Crime Insider sources say the car is tied to a recent missing person case in Richmond.

The body was discovered soon after investigators got to the car.

"We’re collecting evidence and looking at what may have transpired here,” said Lt. Matthew Pecka. “Currently, this is the early stages of a death investigation."

The cornfield runs parallel to the Capital Trail and bicyclists frequent the area near Rockingham Street.

"It’s kind of unusual out here in the country,” said a man who gave his name as Bruce. “There's not a lot that happens out here."

Crime Insider sources say power crews working nearby found the car.

Police are asking the community for some help in this investigation.

"We would encourage anyone who may have seen something along New Market Road to call us at 501-5000 or Crime Stoppers at 780-1000,” said Pecka. “It can be done anonymously.”
