RICHMOND, Va. -- Criminal justice reform is one issue that will be discussed during the special Virginia General Assembly session that started Tuesday in Richmond.

Member of the Back the Blue and Defund Police movements rallied near lawmakers to express their beliefs.

One state lawmaker, Del. Jeff Bourne (D - Richmond), is sponsoring a police reform bill (HB5013) that he said would hold officer more accountable for their actions.

"What we want to do is bring a greater level of accountability to those situations where there has been excessive force and hold those police officers, their employers or local governments, governments that they work for, accountable too so that families can get some sense of relief," Bourne said.

State Senator and gubernatorial candidate Amanda Chase (R - Chesterfield) attended the Back the Blue rally near the Science Museum of Virginia.
