Teen arrested for murder in Chesterfield neighborhood

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- An 18-year-old Chesterfield man was arrested and charged in connection to a fatal July 3 shooting on Handel Court in the Pocoshock Ridge Apartments.

Michael T. Haywood, 18, was arrested July 5 and charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, according to Chesterfield Police.

Haywood, who lives on Handel Court, knew shooting victim Darius Royster.

Police have not yet revealed what led to the fatal shooting.

"At about 3:15 p.m. on July 3, police responded to the area of the 5500 block of Handel Court for a report that an adult male was lying on the ground. When police arrived, they found the victim, who was dead from an apparent gunshot wound," a Chesterfield Police spokesperson said about the crime.

Haywood was booked in Chesterfield Jail without bond.
