NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Two high school students were shot in Newport News, Virginia.

At this time, a male juvenile accused of the shooting is in custody. The investigation remains ongoing.

Police were called to Heritage High School at about 11:30 a.m.

"Two people were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds that are not believed to be life-threatening," a Newport News Police spokesperson wrote.

A male student was shot in the face, according to police. A female student was shot in the leg.

Two or three other students were injured while evacuating the school, police said.

"There have been reports that there are active shooters at other schools in the city. That information is false," police added.

Heritage High School students were evacuated from the school and sent to the tennis courts where they were picked up by their families.

"We are actively searching the building at this time to ensure no students are inside the building," a police spokesperson wrote.

Newport News Police believe the shooter knew those who were shot.

"A suspect is not in custody at this time; however, the suspect is no longer in the school," a police spokesperson wrote. "Evidence has been recovered at the scene. It is believed that the suspect is known to the victims."

While the shooter is not yet in custody, police believe school security video may have captured images of the suspect.

No additional information has been released at this time.

Heritage High School is located at 5800 Marshall Avenue in Newport News.
