KING WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. -- Chakayla Spurlock and Charles H. Fletcher III were inseparable and in love, according to Chakayla's mother.
The young West Point couple was killed together as they drove to work Tuesday morning.
Chakayla, 20, was driving a 1999 Honda Civic south on Farmers Drive in New Kent at about 6:25 a.m. when she hit a patch of black ice, Leslie Spurlock said Virginia State Police told her when they informed her of her daughter's death.
"The preliminary investigation reveals that a 1999 Honda Civic was heading south on Farmers Drive when it crossed the centerline, colliding with a northbound 2021 Chevrolet Equinox," a Virginia State Police spokesperson wrote in an email about the crash."
Chakayla and Fletcher, 21, died at the scene of the crash.
Neither was wearing a seat belt, according to police.
Leslie Spurlock said that would be "extremely out of the ordinary" for her daughter.
Spurlock wanted her daughter, a King William High School graduate and praise dancer at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, and her daughter's boyfriend to be remembered as kind, fun-loving young adults who loved each other and their families. Both, she said, had bright futures ahead of them.
Two people in the other vehicle involved in the crash were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
