CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. -- Virginia State Police are investigating a crash that killed a 12-year-old boy and injured 2 women in Caroline County early Tuesday morning.

Troopers were called to mile marker 112 along Interstate 95 around 7:20 a.m.

"A 2011 Ford Fusion and a Volvo C70 were both traveling south on Interstate 95. The preliminary investigation reveals that the Fusion changed lanes and struck the C70," a Virginia State Police spokesperson wrote in an email. "Both vehicles ran off the left side of the interstate into the median and struck the trees."

The driver of the Volvo, identified as Jesse White, was ejected from the car and suffered life-threatening injuries.

Her 12-year-old passenger died on the scene, police added.

Jocelyn Garcia was driving the Fusion, police said. She was also taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
