RICHMOND, Va. -- A local nonprofit surprised a 10-year-old battling cancer with her only birthday wish this year - a swimming pool.

Sawyer Perkins was diagnosed with anaplastic ependymoma at age 5.

On June 9, family and friends gathered to celebrate her return home from a recent visit at Childrens’ Hospital of Richmond at VCU and to celebrate her upcoming birthday.

Together they surprised Sawyer with an above-ground swimming pool, gifted by Mason’s Toy Box and Medallion Pools.

"When we heard all she wanted was a swimming pool, we couldn't resist. Sawyer has been a recipient of ours in the past. She's also been a volunteer. When she is feeling up to it she attends our events and participates," said Mason's Toy Box President Kelley Kassay, "She should be focused on herself yet she is always giving back."

Mason's Toy Box Foundation helps families engaged in pediatric, medical, life-altering struggles by offering gifts to hospitalized children and their families while also providing relief to these families facing overwhelming emotional and financial burdens throughout each year.
