RICHMOND, Va. -- The Richmond chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity is collecting donations to help the homeless.
Byron Hunter, the vice president of the fraternity's Richmond chapter, stepping up to help to fill a void caused by the global health pandemic.
"Last weekend I met two homeless guys and they mentioned that many of the churches they get their assistance from are closed because of COVID-19," Hunter said.
As a result, Hunter posted on Facebook asking for donations. He ended up raising more than $3,000 in less than a week so he could purchase backpacks and supplies like snacks, toiletries and other essentials to fill them.
He and his fraternity brothers spent part of their Saturday filling the backpacks for distribution.
