RICHMOND, Va. -- A GRTC employee who tested positive for COVID-19 on December 17 and was hospitalized on December 22 has died as a result of the virus, according to the transit company.

“Sunday morning, I heard the heartbreaking news that one of our non-public facing employees passed Saturday night," GRTC Chief Executive Officer Julie Timm said in a statement released to the media. "I am so deeply saddened by this loss to their family and to all of us at GRTC and so deeply weary in my soul of the ongoing toll this disease is taking on all of us and all of our families and friends. This is our second loss of a GRTC employee to complications from the COVID-19 virus. I pray this is our last.”

The deceased was the 38th GRTC employee to test positive for the virus.

GRTC made free counseling available to all GRTC employees and their family members.

The COVID-19 vaccine will be made available to GRTC employees as part of Phase 1b of the state's vaccine roll-out plan.
