RICHMOND, Va. -- A Public Health Emergency has been declared in Virginia, enabling state and local police to enforce the ban on gathering of more than 10 people at Virginia businesses.

Governor Ralph Northam and State Health Commissioner M. Norman Oliver, MD, MA issued the announcement Monday, prohibiting more than 10 patrons in restaurants, fitness centers, and theaters.

“I hope that everyone will have the common sense to stay home tonight and in the days ahead,” said Governor Northam. “This order will ensure that state and local officials have the tools they need to keep people safe.

A State of Emergency was first declared in Virginia on March 12.

As of Thursday, there were 67 confirmed cases across the state.
