Richmond Animal Care & Control is the only open admission public shelter in the City of Richmond. RAC&C provides humane care for more than 4,400 stray, injured, lost, abused and relinquished pets a year. Their professional Animal Control staff investigates animal cruelty, enforces humane laws and issues pet licenses. Assistance is provided to city residents in need of pet lost and found services, low-cost spay/neuter resources and other humane services designed to help pet owners care for their beloved family members!

The Richmond Animal League is located at 11401 International Drive, near Chesterfield Towne Center. RAL’s mission is to provide stray and abandoned dogs and cats with temporary shelter and complete care until permanent loving homes can be found and to decrease the surplus dog and cat population through educational programs that promote responsible pet ownership and the importance of spay/neuter.

The Hanover Humane Society was organized in July 1986, and with the support of the public, raised $20,000 toward the construction of the new County Pound, which opened in 1990. Animals enter their system either as strays, owner surrenders, or from the Hanover County Pound. These animals are given medical care, spayed or neutered, then placed in a foster home, and brought to adoption stands and given visibility on their website until they find a “forever” home.

Goochland Community Cats (GCC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to providing TNR services (trap, neuter, return) of cats, in Goochland county. They provide food, water and shelter to all cats they have TNR’d. They also provide medical care for sick and injured feral cats and find homes for kittens in feral colonies. Goochland Community Cats is a small home based rescue, made up of 100% volunteers.

Cat’s Cradle of Greater Richmond is a kitten and cat adoption and rescue, non-profit 501(c)(3) all-volunteer organization committed to rescuing and adopting cats and kittens, regardless of pedigree, age, physical condition or aesthetic appeal. Their adoption center is located at the PetsMart at Libbie Place, 5515 West Broad Street in Richmond.

Petersburg Animal Care and Control does not charge an adoption fee, however, they do require that all animals be spayed or neutered prior to leaving their facility. The cost of the spay/neuter is paid for by the adopter.

Animal Adoption and Rescue Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping dogs and puppies in Virginia find safe and loving homes. They rescue the animals from abuse, off the streets, from local pounds, and do trapping of homeless dogs and puppies to teach them to be good family members. AARF fosters animals and brings them to adoption stands on Saturdays.

Through a partnership with the Virginia Department of Corrections, inmates at Virginia correctional centers – Buckingham Correctional Center, Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women, and Lunenberg Correctional Center – Pixie’s Pen Pals works to train and socialize rescue dogs with the guidance and instruction from two professional dog trainers.
