RICHMOND, Va. -- Special Olympics Virginia’s annual Polar Plunge, which is usually held at Virginia Beach, has been transformed into a statewide virtual event to “plunge it your way” in 2021.
"If [folks] want to run into the ocean or jump into an ice cool pool they can still do that," Special Olympics Virginia's Senior Director of Development Meg Cary said. "But it’s been a challenging year for everyone, so if they wanna just hang out in a hot tub or sit down by the fire, and celebrate plunge that way you know, we’re not gonna judge."
Funds raised will support 23,000 athletes. Folks can fundraise throughout the month of February, but there is a deadline for those who want to take advantage of the prizes in Plunge Week.
"We will have activation opportunities from February 1 until 6. It will culminate with a plunge celebration. We’ll have our big check presentation," Cary explained. "We’ll show all the footage of everyone who’s been plunging their way throughout the season."
Cary reminded participants to get creative with their costumes.
"Anyone who’s been to a plunge in person knows that the costumes are one of the biggest part of plunge," Cary said. "And so even if you’re jumping into the pool, or running through a sprinkle, we want you to do that in costume and get creative."
And don’t forget to document your plunge and post to social media using the #PlungeYourWay.
