Richmond Lunar New Year Celebration will feature 100-plus performers

RICHMOND, Va. -- The Organization of Chinese Americans Central Virginia Chapter is gearing up for its annual Richmond Lunar New Year Celebration, it’s the year of the Ox.

"It means honesty, hardworking, and intelligent, and very reliable of the year of Ox," said Vice President OCA-CVC Dr. Jinxing Yu.

Quentin Yan, Board member says that "last year we had to cancel last minute because of the pandemic so this year we decided to have it virtually online."

The virtual celebration is filled with over 100 performers, which include lion dance, cultural demonstrations, raffle prizes, and interaction.

"So we will show this live a live stream on Saturday at 1 p.m., but we will keep it there so people so if you miss it you can come back," Yu said.

The OCA supports Chinese Americans in a variety of ways.

"To engage mainly in civil activities such as for the census, for election, and for education," Yu said.

For this year’s event, it was important to offer a different way to celebrate.

"I think the people are looking for something to after this long stay at home they’re looking for something to release energy is really celebrate life," Yu explained.

The Richmond Lunar New Year virtual celebration is Saturday. You can watch it on the OCA’s YouTube’s page starting at 1 p.m.
