RICHMOND, Va. -- A partnership between Woody and Nelsen funeral homes and the Virginia War Memorial is giving Richmonders an opportunity to trade in their old, worn out American flag for new a 3’ by 5’ flag.

The program started when staff noticed that residents were flying their flags all year round and didn’t know what to do with them once they got worn out.

“Our goal is to help Richmond area residents showcase their American spirit on Memorial Day, Flag Day and the Fourth of July,” Lacyn Barton, President of Nelsen and Woody Funeral Homes said. “Our deepest thanks and appreciation go out to those who serve and have fought in defense of our freedom.”

“Disposing of a used American Flag in the proper way is not as easy as it sounds,” Barton said. “Many people are unaware or confused about the proper way to dispose of an old American Flag,” she explained, referring to the Flag Code of the United States which suggests that worn flags should be destroyed in a dignified way, ideally by burning.

The program aims to streamline the process and provide fresh flags while destroying worn flags according to the Flag Code.
