Wayne Covil is the Senior Reporter at WTVR CBS 6. He joined WTVR on December 1, 1992, when he opened up the stations Tri-Cities Bureau in Petersburg.
For 11 and half years, Wayne served as the station's Tri-Cities Bureau Chief, covering Petersburg, Hopewell, Colonial Heights, Dinwiddie County, and Prince George County.
Wayne is what is referred to in the industry as a Multi-Media Journalist (MMJ), or as he refers to it, a one man band. Wayne records, writes, and edits all his own stories.
In July 2001, Wayne became Senior Reporter for the South's First TV Station and while he continues to cover the Tri Cities, he also covers much of Central Virginia.
In 2019, Wayne began his franchise series, Wayne's World, which airs Wednesday Nights at 11pm.
An active member in the community, Wayne has served on various boards and commissions since 1992.
He’s a past member of the Tri-Cities Salvation Army Advisory Board, and past secretary for the Colonial Heights Local Emergency Planning Committee.
Wayne is a former member of the Public Information and Education Committee, a sub-committee to the Commonwealth’s Emergency Services Advisory Board.
Wayne serves as a "Non Profit Auctioneer" for various charities in our area, including the Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Christmas Mother Auction, Tidewater Academy Auction, Richmond Friends of the Homeless Auction, and Crater Hospice Auction.
Wayne is a 1987 graduate of Campbell University in Buies Creek N.C. with a BBA in Business Administration.
Wayne is a proud past member of the Buies Creek Volunteer Fire Department.
He has four times been named “News Employee of the Month” and was the 1994 News Employee of the Year.
In 1994, Wayne won a Virginia Associated Press Award for his year long reports on the 1993 Tri-Cities Tornado and its aftermath.
Wayne has been nominated multiple times for Regional Emmy Awards.
Wayne joined CBS 6 after four and half years as the Jacksonville Bureau Chief for WNCT-TV 9 in North Carolina, which included covering Marine Corps. Base Camp Lejeune during Desert Shield/Desert Storm.
Before that he was the Assistant News Director for WJNC-1240am in Jacksonville NC.
In his spare time, Wayne spent several years as the Track Announcer for Virginia Motorsports Park, the premiere Drag Racing Facility in the Commonwealth. Wayne enjoys the shooting sport of "Skeet" and "Sporting Clays" in his off time.
