CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- Police are investigating after a Monacan High School student made a threat to cause harm at school on Monday.
The Chesterfield County Police Department is working with county school officials to determine the credibility of the threat.
Monacan High School principal Bill Broyles sent a voicemail to parents Monday at about 9:28 p.m.
"Police were alerted earlier this evening to social media chatter as a result of conversations overheard on a school bus regarding potential violence at our school," principal Broyles said in the voicemail. "The police department investigated immediately and have met with students and families. Police have reported to us that there is no credible threat. Out of an abundance of caution, there will be additional police presence at our school tomorrow."
He went on to urge parents to have a conversation with their children.
"Please help us reinforce the message that we continue to share with our students about inappropriate messaging via text and other social media," he said. "This creates a huge disruption to the learning environment, and the police department and school division take online messaging very seriously."
