RICHMOND, Va. -- Demeco Pressey-Robertson, 18, was sentenced to 20 years in prison (a 23-year sentence with three years suspended) for his role in the September 2018 murder of 23-year-old Josh Grey.

Grey was shot and killed outside a store at Mechanicsville Turnpike and Carver Street while selling his iPhone to someone he met using the Letgo app.

Pressey-Robertson was previously convicted of attempted robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery. He was found not guilty of the murder.

The Grey family says they've been living in hell since the death of their son, exactly 389 days from Friday.

"I’m looking just to move on, so we don't have to come to court and somehow close this chapter,” said Diane Grey.

"On September 17, 2018, I received a maximum sentence because the rest of my life, every day that I wake and every day that I go to sleep, I will feel that pain," said Michael Grey.

Prosecutors had claimed Pressey-Robertson orchestrated the plan to rob Grey and set up the iPhone sale. He threatened his 15-year-old accomplice to carry out the robbery, they added.

Pressey-Robertson will serve the maximum for conspiracy to commit robbery and attempted robbery convictions. His defense attorney says her client's punishment is too harsh

"I think the sentence is way too high. I know everybody believes somehow there was some sort of trickery involved. There wasn't, there was any evidence that ever put a gun in Demeco's hand.," she said.

"It’s a message to anyone else watching this. If you do the crime, you’re going to do the time. It's a cliché but that's what happened today," added Michael Grey.

The 15-year-old gunman, previously identified as Tyshawn Andrews, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the case.

He faces up to 40 years in prison when he is sentenced on November 13.

This is a developing story.
