POWHATAN COUNTY, Va. -- A dive team pulled a fully submerged car from the James River at Watkins Landing in Powhatan County.

Deputy Palmer Clifford with the Goochland County Sheriff's Department says the department has made contact with the owner of the vehicle and they are okay. Clifford confirms that the vehicle, a black Ford Taurus, was stolen out of Essex County.

Essex County is conducting the investigation for the stolen vehicle, officials say.

There is no word about how the vehicle got in the water.

Clifford says that a Virginia State Police dive team retrieved the car out of the river. There was no one found inside the vehicle. He said it took teamwork to get the car out of the water.

"It took a little while to get out because there’s a lot of factors that go into recovery out of water," said Clifford. "Once it did come out we investigated what we could, and as I said again, we’re going to be moving it to a secure facility so we can collect evidence that way."

This is a developing story. Witnesses can send news tips, photos, and video here.
