RICHMOND, Va. -- A girl was killed and a boy wounded during a shooting at a park on Richmond's Southside Sunday evening.

Officers were dispatched to Fonticello/Carter Jones Park in the Swansboro neighborhood for a report of a person shot just before 7:25 p.m.

Both children were driven to an area hospital. The girl died of her injuries, police said. The boy suffered life-threatening injuries.

"Right now, detectives are investigating this as a shooting.  They have not released any information as far as motive or circumstances to this case,” Richmond Police spokesman James Mercante said. “Detectives are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers. Detectives believe there were many people at the park at this time and so hopefully the information that comes early in the investigation can be very, very successful.”

A forensics team was examining an area around the skate ramps, as well as another section of the park.

Multiple major crimes detectives were also at the scene.

Officials stressed even the smallest detail could be helpful to investigators.

If you have information that could help detectives, call Crime Stoppers at 804-780-1000 or submit a tip online at http://www.7801000.com. The P3 Tips Crime Stoppers app for smart phones may also be used. All three Crime Stoppers methods of contact are anonymous.

Editor's note: A previous version of this story indicated the little girl who was killed was shot while riding a horse at the community cookout. Her parents said she was near a horse-riding around, but not on a horse.
