RICHMOND, Va. – A man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after a hostage situation in South Richmond Monday morning and afternoon.

Officers responded to the 2100 block of Dinwiddie Avenue for the report of an armed person at approximately 11:29 a.m. A short time later, officers received an additional call for a person shot at the same location.

Upon arrival, officers located 66-year-old Clarence Gregory inside a residence holding another male hostage.

“They found a person that was being held hostage. A man was holding another man hostage with a gun to his head and was bleeding,” said Interim Chief William Smith.

Smith says that hostage was bleeding because he had been shot in the hand.

“After an attempt to negotiate with Gregory, the SWAT team made entry at approximately 12:42 p.m. Gregory was taken into custody,” said a Richmond Police spokesperson. “They also provided medical attention to the victim prior to being transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.”

Gregory, of the 200 block of East 17th Street, has been charged with attempted murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

“We have to take action and we were able to talk that person out successfully. In this case we were able to do so without any force which is, which is a credit to our SWAT team and to our negotiators,” Smith added.
