PETERSBURG, VA. -- A vehicle recovered from Wilcox Lake in Petersburg was reported stolen, according to police.

Captain Emanuel Chambliss said a passerby observed the vehicle sinking in the water just after 5:30 p.m. Monday.

Chesterfield County dive teams, Petersburg Police, and Petersburg Fire crews worked for hours to pull the car from the lake on Defense Road at a boat landing.

Detectives were able to determine the vehicle had been reported stolen from the 1600 block of Berkeley Avenue, according to Chambliss.

No one was found inside of black Nissan recovered from the lake around 8:30 p.m.

Pam Colden from Petersburg stopped and streamed the recovery mission on Facebook Live.

"They have people who fish out here sometimes so check on your people and make sure everybody is OK," Colden told her watchers. "Hopefully it’s just a car with nobody in it and hopefully it’s nobody that we know. Let’s just pray."

This is a developing story. Witnesses can send news tips, photos, and video here.
