RICHMOND, Va. -- Police have released the name of the man they say was driving a stolen car when he crashed into a pole on the Mayo Bridge Friday night.

Richmond Police said an officer spotted a vehicle that had been reported stolen on southbound on 14th Street near the Mayo Bridge just before 9:30 p.m.

"The officer activated emergency equipment and attempted a traffic stop but the vehicle sped away onto the bridge," officials said.

Officers said the driver, who was the only person in the car, lost control and hit a traffic light pole at the south end of the bridge.

Police said 39-year-old Keith D. Haines died at the scene.

Haines' uncle said was stunned by the news.

"This morning I got a text from my ex wife telling me that my little nephew was in a car accident and passed away," Jimmy Squire said. "I'm very shocked."

The Richmond Police Department Crash Team is investigating.
