Arctic blast will produce bitter wind chills

RICHMOND, Va. --  An arctic cold front will move through the area Sunday, producing a 30° temperature drop between sunrise and late evening.  Temperatures will fall from the upper 50s into the upper 20s during that period.

Winds will shift to the northwest and increase, with gusts over 30 mph in the metro. Gusts may reach 50 mph across northern, western and eastern Virginia, where wind advisories are in effect.

Temperatures will be in the 20s with mainly clear skies for the total lunar eclipse of the Super Blood Wolf Moon.

Wind chills will be in the single digits Sunday evening and may dip below zero in spots early Monday morning. Some wind chill advisories are in effect from midnight until 9 am Monday.

Low temperatures Monday morning will be in the teens. Monday will be sunny with highs only in the 20s, the coldest high since last January 7. A strong breeze will keep wind chills in the single digits and teens. Monday night will be very cold with lows in the single digits and teens.

The arctic air is very dry, so when you bring that air inside and heat it, the relative humidity is very low.  On Monday afternoon, if you are not running a humidifier, the indoor relative humidity will be less than 5%.  Typically, you want the indoor humidity to be above 30% and below 40%.

Winds will die down on Tuesday and highs will reach the mid and upper 30s.  It will turn much warmer on Wednesday with highs in the 50s. Showers are possible later in the day, with some steadier rain in the area on Thursday.

Another arctic cold front will pass on Friday, ushering in more cold air for Saturday.
