RICHMOND, Va. -- Richmond Police shot and killed a man with a knife inside a home on West Cary Street in Richmond, according to Richmond Police. Police were called to the home, near Meadow Street, at about 11 a.m. for a reported burglary.

Police entered and quickly moved through the house and out the back door where they encountered a man stabbing a woman. A second man was also present, bleeding from apparent stab wounds.

Officers ordered the man to drop the knife, but he ignored those commands and continued to stab the woman. At that point, police shot him, according to Richmond Police Chief Alfred Durham.

The man was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. His name will be released Thursday.

The two stabbing victims were also transported to a local hospital for treatment of their wounds. A third stabbing victim, an adult woman, drove herself to a local hospital for treatment. All three victims are expected to survive

Detectives believe the incident began several minutes earlier when the attacker attempted to force his way into the home.

The woman and two others in the house fled to a convenience store half a block away, but the man followed them into the store and forced them back into the house.

Police believe the victims knew the man with the knife, and Crime Insider sources report that he was due in court next week on assault and battery charges.

The two officers have been placed on administrative leave and will be identified after a Risk Assessment has been conducted.

This is a developing story. Witnesses can send news tips, photos, and video here.
