HOPEWELL, Va. -- A Hopewell man was taken into custody on outstanding arrest warrants following an interaction with Virginia State Police along the side of Interstate 295.

"A Virginia State Police trooper traveling north on Interstate 295 [at 2:25 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4], a observed two vehicles stopped on the right shoulder at the 11 mile marker in the city limits of Hopewell," a Virginia State Police spokesperson said. "The trooper pulled in behind the vehicles to see if the vehicles were disabled and/or if the motorists were in need of assistance. The trooper approached the vehicles and during the course of talking with the two males at the scene, one of them fled on foot into the woods."

Eddie Lee Williams Jr., 27, of Hopewell, was taken into custody on outstanding arrests warrants for him on file in Hopewell and Colonial Heights, a Virginia State Police spokesperson said.

Before he was taken into custody, Williams ran to a home near the interstate.

A man living in a house where he showed up, told police the fleeing passenger knocked on his door and claimed to be a robbery victim, asking to use the phone.

There was no need to call 9-1-1, he said, because police were already swarming the area.

A fire marshal who happened to be driving in the neighborhood, pointed him out.

When police inspected the suspect's car, they found an Uzi in the back seat of the sedan, Crime Insider sources told Jon Burkett.

A Virginia State Police spokesperson disputed that report and said firearm found inside the vehicle was not an Uzi.

The gun, she said, was legally possessed by one of the men in the car.

This story was updated following a Wednesday afternoon press release from Virginia State Police.
