1 p.m. Saturday update -- the winter weather advisory for northwestern Virginia has expired.

11:30 a.m. Saturday update -- many areas west of I-95 are above freezing.  There will still be a few pockets of freezing rain in the coldest sections of northwestern Virginia.  The winter weather advisory there will expire this afternoon.

9 a.m. Saturday update -- The winter weather advisory is no longer in effect for Stafford, Louisa and Fluvanna counties.

RICHMOND, Va. -- A storm system will spread rain across the area Saturday.  While temperatures a bit above the surface will be warming up, cold air will hang in place near the ground.

The metro and points east will be fine, but there will be some sleet and freezing rain possible until midday for areas well west of I-95.  Temperatures there may be near or just below freezing through late morning.

A light accumulation is possible west of Highway 15, and a winter weather advisory is in effect for icy spots on untreated surfaces.  This will mainly be elevated road surfaces and sidewalks.

Temperatures will increase from the morning into the early afternoon, ending the freezing rain threat to the west.

We will see periods of steady rain with over 1/2" possible.  Afternoon highs will range from the upper 30s northwest to the lower 60s southeast.  Richmond will be in the mid 50s.   Rain should turn more scattered during the evening.

Sunday will be dry and warmer with highs around 60°.
