LOUISA COUNTY, Va. – Virginia State Police have identified the man killed in a small plane crash in Louisa County Sunday afternoon.

State Police responded to crash in a small solar and cattle farm near Chalklevel Road at approximately 3:05 p.m.

"An experimental aircraft had taken off from the Louisa County Airport when it crashed a short time later in a clearing on private property in the 400 block of Chalklevel Road," said a State Police spokesperson.

The pilot, identified as Timothy M. Henson, 70, of Palmyra, was killed during the crash, according to State Police. Henson, the only occupant of the plane, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash scene is located two miles away from Freeman Field, the Louisa County Airport.

Ashley Menafra says she was letting the dogs out when she heard a noise that sounded like a gunshot.

While Menafra may have only heard the boom and seen the response, it doesn't keep her from empathizing with the pilot's family.

"I'm sorry. I really am. It's heartbreaking," said Menafra. "I feel so bad. I've had multiple people deceased in my family, and I can understand the families concerned."

At this point, officials do not know what caused the aircraft to go down.

Investigators with the FAA and NTSB have been notified and will examine the scene Monday morning, according to Virginia State Police.

The crash remains under investigation.
