CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- The left lane of Interstate 295 south at Route 10 in Chesterfield remained closed Tuesday morning following a Monday bridge strike, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).

The ramps from Route 10 west to I-295 south and from I-295 south to Route 10 east remain are also closed, as well as the eastbound right lane on Route 10.

The lane closures have allowed VDOT workers to inspect damage done to the bridge after it was struck.

They found damage to an exterior beam which needed immediate repairs.

"Following the removal of crash debris, crews determined that immediate bridge repairs are necessary for the safety of the traveling public," VDOT district maintenance engineer Sean Nelson said. "We will continue to inspect the overpass to determine the extent of the damage and establish a schedule for additional repairs."

Work repairs are expected to remain through next week.
